this is a COMPLETE rebuild of the original game in unreal engine, with both the original levels and a bunch of quality of life features added. this thing looks fucking incredible, one of the labor-est of love labors i've ever seen. if you ever played the original (or like weird obscure RTS games) it's absolutely worth checking out. Gonna try it out myself this week, I hope. Find the download here: https://baraklava.itch.io/manic-miners and the trailer below!
genuinely this thing is wild. i can't wait to check it out becuase it's just one guy's weird labor of love that he refuses to take money for or let anyone else work on as he rebuilds an entire ancient pc game from scratch. my favorite type of Weirdo Online Guy project
sitting in my car in a Seattle parking lot. there's a knock on my window. it's an old lady, who asks me "how do we pay for parking?"
This shit is my daily life at work constantly trying to help people without computer literacy at the "took one compsci class in college" level do basic shit that now requires an email and an app when it used to just be talking to a person
every time I see an instance of technology friction like this, I am reminded of a section of Wang Huning's book "America Against America" (1991) in which he describes the use of technology as a mechanism of control beyond what politics/laws do, i.e. people can maneuver around when working with people, but when addressing a machine, it can only respond within its ability, hardware or software. a computer doesn't have the capability to allow exceptions based on context and human-to-human empathy, it can only follow its programming
There are about two dozen sports and culture clubs at Nagareboshi; I drew these vector badges for students to wear as pins for the character sprites in HERO. I'm pretty proud of how all of them turned out.
